European Parliament Restricts AI Tools on Lawmakers' Devices Due to Security Concerns

The European Parliament has decided to prohibit lawmakers from utilizing integrated AI tools on their work devices, citing significant concerns regarding cybersecurity and privacy risks associated with uploading sensitive communications to cloud services.

In an internal email, the parliament's IT department expressed its inability to ensure the security of data sent to AI companies' servers, adding that the full implications of the information shared with these companies are still under evaluation.

Consequently, the email stated, "It is deemed safer to keep such features disabled."

Using AI chatbots, such as Claude by Anthropic, Microsoft's Copilot, and OpenAI's ChatGPT, raises the risk that U.S. authorities may request these companies to provide user data.

Moreover, AI chatbots typically enhance their models based on user-provided information, which increases the likelihood that sensitive data uploaded by one individual could be accessed by others.

Europe is known for having some of the strictest data protection regulations globally. However, last year, the European Commission proposed new legislation to relax these rules, aiming to facilitate tech giants in training their AI models using European data. This move has faced criticism, with opponents arguing it favors U.S. technology companies.

The decision to limit access to AI products for European lawmakers coincides with a growing reassessment among several EU member states regarding their partnerships with U.S. tech firms, which are governed by U.S. laws and the unpredictable nature of the current administration.
