Embracing Music: A Father's Journey as His Toddler's DJ

A father's unexpected journey into music as he embraces his toddler's passion for vinyl records, discovering joy and creativity in the process.

Every child experiences the joy of music in their early years, often beginning with simple instruments like the recorder. For many, this is a carefree introduction to sound, nestled among the playful activities of childhood. However, as I transitioned to first grade at Increase Miller Elementary School, the pressure of playing a "real instrument" became apparent. Assigned the violin, I quickly discovered that my enthusiasm for music was limited, culminating in a dramatic moment where I broke my instrument before a concert.

Despite my rocky start with music, I cherished listening to it throughout my life. I still recall the thrill of owning my first portable CD player, blasting Hootie & the Blowfish on the bus. As technology evolved, so did my music collection, filled with classics from Led Zeppelin to Pink Floyd, albeit with a hint of nostalgia for the days of physical media.

Fast forward to the birth of my son, who, even before uttering "Mama" or "Dada," expressed a fascination with music through his first word: "record." This unexpected passion emerged despite my attempts to introduce him to sports and art, revealing his unique connection to sound.

My parents had gifted me a collection of around 300 vinyl records, which had been gathering dust until my son discovered them. Positioned at his eye level, these records became his playground, igniting a love for music that I never anticipated. From the moment he began crawling, he showed an insatiable curiosity for the vinyl collection, and I found myself embracing the role of his personal DJ.

He eagerly picks out records, and with my help, learns how to operate the turntable. The joy on his face as the music fills the room is a sight to behold. His favorites range from The Beatles to Bruce Springsteen, and he revels in the rich, layered sounds that vinyl offers. It's fascinating to witness my 14-month-old son develop a genuine appreciation for music, especially a band like Chicago.

As a parent, I've come to realize that the true value of these records lies not in their condition but in the happiness they bring to my child. I've shifted my perspective on what it means to treasure these items, understanding that allowing him to explore music freely fosters his creativity. This experience has taught me that sometimes, it's essential to let go of control and let children cultivate their passions.

As he approaches kindergarten, I find myself curious about his evolving relationship with music. Will he embrace the recorder, or will his love for vinyl continue to flourish? Whatever the outcome, it's clear that the journey of musical discovery is just beginning.
