SITE Santa Fe has announced the selection of independent curator Ekow Eshun to lead the organization of its next International exhibition, set to debut in the summer of 2027. Eshun, who is based in London, has garnered recognition for his impactful exhibitions, including the acclaimed "In the Black Fantastic" at the Hayward Gallery in 2022, which featured notable artists from the African diaspora.
His recent work at the National Portrait Gallery, titled "The Time Is Always Now: Artists Reframe the Black Figure," showcased over 20 artists and re-evaluated the representation of Black individuals in art history, marking a significant contribution to contemporary discourse.
Louis Grachos, the executive director of SITE, expressed enthusiasm about Eshun's appointment, highlighting his fresh and dynamic approach that was evident in his previous curatorial projects. Grachos noted that Eshun's involvement in a related exhibition at SITE in 2023 sparked a desire to collaborate further, leading to this exciting opportunity.
Alongside his responsibilities for the SITE International, Eshun is also curating the 10th edition of the British Art Show, which will tour five cities across the UK. He aims to approach both exhibitions with a cohesive vision, focusing on how artists challenge perceptions of history, identity, and belonging.
Grachos emphasized the importance of the International in fostering community engagement and facilitating international dialogue. Eshun's exhibition will also delve into the complex histories of New Mexico, enriching the narrative of contemporary art in the region.
Reflecting on the unique geography and history of the Southwest, Eshun is excited about the potential of SITE as a platform for exploring diverse artistic legacies. Although he has not finalized the theme or artist list for the upcoming International, he is actively compiling a list of artists to consider for this significant event.
