James Reka, an artist hailing from Australia, finds his true calling in public art, despite enjoying creative freedom in his studio. He delves into the history of buildings and neighborhoods to inspire his murals, relishing the challenge of working within specific cultural and geographic contexts.
"Public art must resonate with the local community," Reka emphasizes. "It should convey a narrative or message, even if subtly. I see this as an opportunity to explore themes and color schemes that differ from my studio pieces."
Reka's artwork transforms minimalist forms into vibrant compositions that exude energy and motion. His geometric designs highlight color combinations and layers, often using contrasting shades to depict elements like hands or faces, while also integrating architectural features such as windows and pipes into his murals.
Although he approaches studio and street art differently, Reka notes a recent trend towards abstraction in all his works. "I never excelled at creating realistic art! Perhaps I subconsciously recognized my strengths and weaknesses early in my artistic journey," he reflects.
In his creative process, Reka often begins with proportionally accurate sketches, then reduces them to their simplest forms. He embraces the unexpected outcomes of sketching, which guide him in shaping the content and layout. "Certain lines catch my attention, prompting me to manipulate and further abstract them. Ultimately, I deconstruct the content and reconstruct its fundamental elements in an abstract manner," he explains.
Currently, Reka is gearing up for a solo exhibition this fall in his hometown of Melbourne, showcasing his latest projects both in and out of the studio.
