Duolingo Expands Access to Advanced Language Learning Content for Free

Duolingo now offers free access to advanced language learning content across nine languages, enhancing skills for users worldwide and promoting employability.

Duolingo has made an exciting announcement: advanced language learning materials are now available to all users at no cost. This new feature spans nine languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese. Accessible via web and mobile platforms, this initiative aims to enhance the language learning experience for users worldwide.

The advanced content aligns with the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), which is widely recognized by educational institutions and employers. This level includes learning resources that focus on complex scenarios, specialized vocabulary, and materials without translations.

Among the innovative features included are "Advanced Stories," designed to bolster reading comprehension, and DuoRadio, an engaging audio experience that enhances listening skills. With these tools, Duolingo users can significantly improve their language proficiency, preparing for job interviews, studying abroad, or engaging with intricate texts and media without relying on translations.

Duolingo positions itself uniquely in the market as the only free app offering advanced-level content in these nine languages. While other platforms like Babbel and Busuu provide advanced courses, they typically require a subscription. For example, Busuu offers some B2-level courses, but the free version lacks comprehensive lessons, compelling users to opt for paid access.

Previously, Duolingo's offerings were limited to A2 or B1 levels, focusing primarily on foundational communication skills. This shift to include advanced learning content is a strategic move to attract job seekers, emphasizing the importance of language proficiency in a globalized job market.

Research from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages indicates that knowing a second language can enhance employability by up to 50%. Bozena Pajak, Duolingo's head of learning science, remarked that achieving job-ready proficiency in a new language was once a challenge due to the high costs and accessibility issues associated with traditional classes.

This initiative also aims to grow Duolingo's free user base, which currently boasts 52.7 million daily active users, reflecting a 30% increase from the previous year. In contrast, their paid subscriber count stands at 12.2 million. Despite a slight decline in projected year-over-year bookings growth for Q2 2026, the company remains focused on expanding its user community.

By democratizing access to advanced language learning, Duolingo is not only enhancing individual skill sets but also fostering a more globally competent workforce, paving the way for a future where language barriers are significantly reduced.
