DuckDuckGo Introduces Encrypted Voice AI Chat to Compete with ChatGPT and Gemini

DuckDuckGo's new voice AI chat, Duck.ai, emphasizes privacy while competing with ChatGPT and Gemini. Discover its features and limitations in our latest review.

As OpenAI continues to monetize its free services through advertisements, DuckDuckGo is taking a different route with its Duck.ai platform. This privacy-centric AI chatbot prioritizes user confidentiality by not utilizing personal data for training purposes, while still providing intelligent responses using well-known models, including those from OpenAI. The platform goes a step further in data protection by eliminating all personal metadata, such as location and IP address, before engaging with its AI model. Importantly, neither user inquiries nor DuckDuckGo's responses contribute to AI training.

Launched in 2024, Duck.ai initially featured only a chatbot interface. However, the platform has recently introduced a voice chat option. With this new feature, users can receive concise and relevant replies, avoiding lengthy responses. Duck.ai's voice chat competes with offerings from companies like OpenAI and Google, and it remains free, although DuckDuckGo subscribers can access expanded features.

Understanding Duck.ai's Voice Chat Functionality

Users can opt into Duck.ai's voice chat feature without needing a DuckDuckGo account. To explore this functionality, simply visit the Duck.ai portal, select the voice chat option from the sidebar, and activate it for your account.

Once enabled, clicking the "New Voice Chat" button will prompt Duck.ai's bot to respond to your voice queries. Similar to ChatGPT and Gemini, this feature allows for a continuous conversation, enabling users to ask follow-up questions seamlessly. Users can even interrupt the AI's responses for clarifications or additional inquiries.

While text prompts allow users to select various models (including OpenAI's ChatGPT 5-mini), the specific model powering the voice chat remains unspecified by DuckDuckGo, although they acknowledge using an OpenAI model.

Evaluating AI Voice Chats: ChatGPT Takes the Lead

The pivotal question is how Duck.ai's voice chat performs compared to Gemini and ChatGPT. For general knowledge inquiries, Duck.ai holds its ground, but it struggles with current events. In tests involving identical queries, responses varied, with ChatGPT's voice mode providing the most satisfying user experience overall.

During the evaluation, I posed three different types of questions: one about the upcoming Samsung S26 series, another regarding the Roman Empire, and the last seeking advice on starting to code.

When it came to news-related questions, such as the Samsung S26 release, DuckDuckGo's limitations became apparent. It occasionally declined to answer, citing a knowledge cutoff in 2023, or provided vague suggestions to check news outlets for updates. When pressed for specifics, it reverted to its cutoff excuse.

In contrast, ChatGPT delivered comprehensive answers with the latest rumors and additional reading materials, fulfilling the expectations of an AI assistant. Gemini Live offered shorter yet accurate responses, but I found it necessary to switch to regular text mode for more detailed information.

Duck.ai's performance was similar when I inquired about the Roman Empire. While it accurately identified the last emperor, Romulus Augustulus, its overview lacked depth regarding the transitional period and key dates.

Conversely, ChatGPT provided a more elaborate response, while Gemini Live's answer lacked significant details. Although Gemini's voice mode was limited, it offered more information in text mode.

Duck.ai excelled when discussing coding, suggesting Python as a starting point and referencing popular resources like freeCodeCamp and Harvard's CS50 courses. Gemini Live, however, distinguished itself by asking follow-up questions about my project aspirations and adapting its recommendations accordingly.

In conclusion, Duck.ai's voice chat feature presents a mixed experience. It offers speed and privacy, allowing users to interrupt responses, but its limited knowledge base and lack of detailed answers hinder its overall effectiveness. For the most seamless voice chat experience, ChatGPT remains the preferred choice. While DuckDuckGo excels in privacy, users can also utilize ChatGPT in a logged-out or temporary mode to minimize data sharing.
