Discovering 'Jalopy Pace': A New Way to Enjoy Group Cycling

BEGINNING MY JOURNEY as a cyclist in New York City during the spring of 2023 ignited a passion that quickly enveloped me. I immersed myself in a plethora of YouTube tutorials on equipment and training techniques, explored the city's evolving cycling infrastructure, and even became an avid follower of professional cycling events. Yet, despite my enthusiasm, the idea of joining a group ride filled me with trepidation. I feared being left behind amidst a flurry of more adept riders.

Little did I know, the time spent riding with friends on the outskirts of larger group rides would lead me to conceptualize what I now refer to as "Jalopy Pace." While the term might imply a vintage or dilapidated vehicle, it embodies a mindset of carefree cycling, ensuring that no one is left behind.

Similar to running clubs that foster both movement and community, Jalopy Pace rides have evolved into my invitation for those hesitant to join group rides. It's a welcoming approach that encourages participation regardless of skill level.

The Journey to Jalopy Pace

My breakthrough moment came after engaging with various cycling-related social media accounts, which led me to discover flyers for public group rides organized by local groups. Although these flyers provided essential details like start and end points, they often lacked clarity on routes and expected speeds, leaving me uncertain about my ability to keep up.

Over time, my love for cycling blossomed while riding with friends, whether we were navigating parks or exploring distant coffee shops. The camaraderie and motivation from fellow riders inspired me to push my limits.

It took a friend's invitation to my first significant group ride to shift my perspective. Contrary to my expectations, the pace was moderate, allowing for conversation and connection. Our leader skillfully navigated traffic, ensuring everyone felt included, especially when tackling hills.

My initial assumptions about group rides were proven wrong. New York City boasts a vibrant cycling community, offering a variety of group rides that cater to different preferences, from fast-paced pelotons to inclusive gatherings.

When I launched my newsletter, Leg Day, focused on urban cycling, I aimed to dispel the notion that only experienced cyclists could participate. My trusty 1970s Schwinn, while not the fastest, became a symbol of the inclusivity I wanted to promote.

Every ride I organized embraced the Jalopy Pace philosophy, prioritizing a communal atmosphere over speed. Participants were encouraged to support one another and take breaks as needed, fostering a friendly and empowering environment.

Bringing Jalopy Pace to Life

Last fall, during the Prospect Park Half Century event, I witnessed the power of this inclusive approach. We divided participants into three groups based on their comfort levels, including a Jalopy pack for those new to longer rides. Despite initial concerns, the group completed the ride with smiles, proving that cycling could be enjoyable at any pace.

Ultimately, the essence of cycling--and any passion--lies in the joy it brings. Expanding this joy to include more people is my enduring goal, ensuring that as long as I organize rides, they will embody the spirit of Jalopy Pace.
