In an era where the art scene is evolving, the digital realm is gaining traction as a legitimate medium for artistic expression. CIFRA, a new streaming platform, is pioneering this shift by offering a dedicated space for artists who specialize in video, sound, and other time-based media. Unlike traditional social media, which often prioritizes quick consumption, CIFRA enables artists to showcase intricate works, establish provenance, and engage with curators and collectors in a supportive environment.

This platform not only enhances audience interaction but also empowers users to curate their experiences. Public playlists allow community members to act as curators, while tools designed for navigation and curator highlights facilitate deeper exploration of genres, artists, and art history. Based in Dubai and developed with input from global art experts, CIFRA aims to provide the necessary infrastructure for digital art to thrive.

Among the 1,500 artworks available, many explore themes like duality, verification systems, and the gamification of everyday life. For instance, before the internet, gaming offered a controlled space to escape societal norms, whereas today, elements of gaming pervade our daily activities--from dating to finance. The following six artists exemplify the innovative spirit and thematic depth found on CIFRA:

The Runaways, 2010-2011, Carla Gannis

In this performance piece, Gannis features herself and a virtual avatar from a classic life-simulation game, illustrating the contrast between digital and physical worlds as they navigate landscapes that challenge reality.

SKINS.II, 2025, Klimentina Li

This interactive visual novel questions virtual representation and identity through a narrative populated by humanoid and robotic figures, exploring the complexities of digital existence.

LoveCounter, 2025, Ruini Shi

Shi's work satirizes the gamification of relationships by proposing a fictional platform that quantifies love through blockchain technology and NFTs, highlighting the commercialization of personal connections.

Roam Simulator, 2020, Cao Shu

In this interactive installation, participants traverse a digitally rendered desert landscape, blending memory with virtual experience and inviting reflection on personal history.

Swatted, 2021, Ismaël Joffroy Chandoutis

This short film captures the unsettling reality of online harassment, showcasing how malicious actions in the digital realm can disrupt real lives, blending animation and documentary footage.

MEET ME IN DIFFUSION, 2024, Lihao Shao

Shao's work employs AI-generated imagery to create a thought-provoking narrative about the intertwining of virtual identities and global realities, culminating in a striking visual commentary on our world.

These diverse artists reflect the dynamic potential of digital art, challenging viewers to reconsider the boundaries between the virtual and the real.
