The 2026 Milky Way Photographer of the Year contest, organized by Capture the Atlas, has achieved a remarkable milestone with over 6,500 submissions showcasing diverse landscapes and perspectives from various corners of the globe. From these impressive entries, only 25 photographs were chosen as the finest, representing regions ranging from the Canary Islands to New Zealand and Argentina.
Dan Zafra, the editor of Capture the Atlas and curator of this annual competition, emphasized the essence of these photographs: "Every year, this collection reminds us that capturing the Milky Way transcends mere technique or meticulous planning. It embodies curiosity, patience, and a longing to experience the night sky in its most untouched forms." He further noted that many of these breathtaking night skies are becoming increasingly rare, urging viewers to not only admire these visuals but also to appreciate and safeguard these celestial wonders.
Among the exceptional images, highlights include:
- Brendan Larsen captured the Milky Way over Syme Hut and Mt. Taranaki in New Zealand.
- Max Terwindt showcased a stunning panorama of the Caldera Galaxy from La Palma, Canary Islands.
- Lukasz Remkowicz depicted the Milky Way over the Tatra Mountains in Poland.
- Leonel Padron presented an evocative image titled "Lost in the Ripples of Space and Time" from Pinnacles Desert, Western Australia.
- Anastasia Gulova framed the beautiful "Galaxy on the Rise" in Tenerife, Spain.
- Daniel Viñé Garcia displayed "My Perfect Night" from Catamarca, Argentina.
- Anthony Lopez illustrated "Celestial Light over Sea Cliffs" from the French Riviera.
- Uroš Fink captured the "Geminid Symphony Over La Palma's Guardian of the Sky" near the GTC Telescope.
