DeepSeek Eyes $45 Billion Valuation in Upcoming Investment Round

DeepSeek, a Chinese AI lab, aims for a $45 billion valuation in its first investment round, reflecting its rapid growth and competitive edge in AI technology.

DeepSeek, a prominent Chinese AI laboratory, is preparing to raise its inaugural round of venture capital, with its estimated valuation skyrocketing from $20 billion to an impressive $45 billion in just a matter of weeks, as reported by leading financial sources.

The lab gained significant attention in early 2025 after unveiling a large language model that operates on a fraction of the computational resources required by major U.S. models, such as those developed by OpenAI and Anthropic. DeepSeek has consistently kept pace with the world's leading models in areas like reasoning and coding, while ensuring that its open-weight versions remain freely accessible on platforms like Hugging Face.

Founded by the billionaire hedge fund magnate Liang Wenfeng, who owns nearly 90% of the company, DeepSeek had not previously pursued external investments. However, in response to competition attracting its talent, Liang decided to seek funding to enable employee share ownership, according to insider reports.

The funding round is expected to be spearheaded by the China Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund, which is part of the country's strategy to bolster local AI technology amidst challenges in acquiring U.S. technology, particularly in the semiconductor sector. DeepSeek has been specifically optimized to function on chips manufactured by Huawei Technologies, positioning it as a key player in China's ambition to cultivate its own AI capabilities that can rival those of the United States. Additionally, major cloud service providers like Tencent and Alibaba are rumored to be considering participation in this funding initiative.

DeepSeek has not yet responded to requests for comments regarding the investment round.

This significant investment could not only enhance DeepSeek's technological advancements but also contribute to a more competitive landscape in the global AI market, potentially reshaping the future of artificial intelligence development.
