DeepMind's David Silver Secures $1.1 Billion to Develop AI Without Human Data

Ineffable Intelligence, a newly established AI laboratory in the UK, has successfully raised $1.1 billion in funding, achieving a remarkable valuation of $5.1 billion. Founded by former DeepMind researcher David Silver, the lab aims to innovate AI models that could surpass existing large language models.

The mission of Ineffable Intelligence is to develop a "superlearner" that can autonomously acquire knowledge and skills without depending on human-generated data. This ambitious approach utilizes reinforcement learning, where AI systems learn through trial and error rather than from human examples, a field where Silver excels.

As a professor at University College London, Silver previously led the reinforcement learning team at DeepMind for over a decade. His contributions included creating groundbreaking programs that triumphed over professional players in chess and Go by learning solely through experience, without human strategies. Notably, this included the development of AlphaZero, which achieved remarkable success in both games.

Ineffable Intelligence's vision is grand; the team believes that if their superlearner succeeds, it could represent a scientific breakthrough akin to Darwin's theory of evolution, with their findings potentially explaining and constructing all forms of intelligence.

In a personal message on the company blog, Silver described this endeavor as "his life's work" and expressed his commitment to donating any profits from Ineffable to impactful charities aimed at saving lives.

While the timeline for generating revenue remains uncertain, the venture has attracted significant investment. The funding round was led by Sequoia Capital and Lightspeed Venture Partners, with additional participation from Index Ventures, Google, Nvidia, and the UK's newly established sovereign venture fund for AI, Sovereign AI.

With its valuation exceeding $5 billion, Ineffable Intelligence joins an elite group of AI startups founded by renowned researchers, often referred to as part of the "coconut round" funding phenomenon. This trend reflects the growing interest and investment in AI innovation, as seen in other recent ventures like AMI Labs, co-founded by Turing Award winner Yann LeCun, which raised $1.03 billion.

Moreover, the emergence of companies like Recursive Superintelligence, co-founded by former DeepMind principal scientist Tim Rocktäschel, indicates a burgeoning AI ecosystem in London, which continues to thrive thanks to DeepMind's legacy and ongoing presence.

As Ineffable Intelligence progresses, it could further solidify London's status as a global AI hub, fostering a vibrant network of talent and innovation that shapes the future of artificial intelligence.
