Behind the joke is a real shift in the tech world. As data centers expand, many operators are looking at recycled water and other alternative sources to support cooling systems. Experts from Ecolab, the WateReuse Association, and CDM Smith note that treated wastewater can already be used for industrial cooling in many places.
That process is far more advanced than the campaign's punchline suggests. Water treatment facilities use methods such as membrane bioreactors, reverse osmosis, and ultraviolet light to clean wastewater for reuse. In some cases, the treated water can even reach potable standards.
The challenge is scale. Large data centers need huge volumes of water, and not every region has the infrastructure to supply enough recycled water nearby. In places like Loudoun County, Virginia, where data centers are concentrated, recycled water already plays a major role, but potable water still covers a significant share of demand.
Industry leaders say this is pushing companies to invest in new water systems. Meta, for example, has announced funding for wastewater infrastructure near its data centers, while water-reuse advocates are calling for policy support to accelerate adoption.
The bigger story is not the joke itself, but the growing recognition that AI infrastructure must evolve alongside environmental innovation. As computing demand rises, recycled water could become a key part of building smarter, more sustainable digital ecosystems for the future.
