Dariusz Stola Returns as Director of Poland's Jewish Museum Following Political Shift

After a seven-year hiatus, Dariusz Stola is set to reclaim his position as the director of Poland's foremost Jewish museum, marking a significant moment in the nation's cultural landscape. His reinstatement follows the recent defeat of the far-right government, signaling a renewed commitment to artistic and historical integrity.

Stola previously led the Polin Museum of the History of Polish Jews since its inception in 2014, earning widespread recognition. However, his tenure was abruptly interrupted by the nationalist Law and Justice party, which sought to impose a revisionist narrative on Poland's history. The party's eight-year governance came to an end in 2023, paving the way for a more centrist coalition that aims to restore freedom of expression in the arts.

The new culture minister, Marta Cienkowska, appointed by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, has reinstated Stola. In a statement on social media, she emphasized the importance of honoring the results of the director selection process that had been overlooked in 2019. "That appointment should have taken place six years ago. Dear Professor, good luck," she remarked.

In an interview, Stola expressed his reinstatement as a triumph of justice and the rule of law. He noted that he had temporarily stepped down in 2019 after his reappointment was blocked, handing over the reins to his deputy, Zygmunt Stępiński. With Stola's return, Stępiński will resume his previous role as deputy director.

Reflecting on the journey, Stola stated, "This confirms that the strategy we took in 2019 was right. I lost only temporarily, and we have preserved the autonomy of the museum despite heavy political pressure."

During the previous administration, numerous museum directors faced dismissal, often replaced by individuals loyal to the party but lacking relevant experience. Notably, the former head of the Zachęta National Gallery of Art, Hanna Wróblewska, was removed in favor of a candidate who publicly criticized progressive ideologies.

The Law and Justice party's approach to Poland's Jewish history was characterized by a rejection of narratives that scrutinized their governance, which they termed a "pedagogy of shame." This led to the suppression of research and exhibitions related to the Holocaust and Polish Jews, making Stola a target after overseeing a significant exhibition in 2018 that highlighted the government's antisemitic campaign of 1968.

Today, Stola emphasized the museum's vital mission, stating, "The mission of the museum is even more important today, in the face of the dark forces distorting the memory of the Polish-Jewish past." His return heralds a new chapter for cultural dialogue and remembrance in Poland.
