Curatorial Team Announced for El Museo's Upcoming Latine Art Survey

El Museo del Barrio announces the curatorial team for the 2027 Latine art survey, showcasing diverse voices in contemporary art.

El Museo del Barrio has unveiled the curatorial team for the highly anticipated 2027 edition of La Trienal, a significant survey dedicated to Latine contemporary art. This year's exhibition will be led by Susanna V. Temkin, who serves as the interim chief curator at El Museo, alongside Zuna Maza, the assistant curator, and guest curator Kaitlin Garcia-Maestas, known for her previous role as curator and director of exhibitions at Socrates Sculpture Park.

Continuing the tradition of showcasing talent from Latin American and Caribbean backgrounds, La Trienal will present works by artists residing in the United States, Puerto Rico, and beyond. This exhibition aims to highlight the diverse voices and creative expressions within these communities, fostering a deeper understanding of their cultural narratives.

In addition to this exciting announcement, the art world is abuzz with several notable curator appointments. Amanda Carneiro and Raphael Fonseca have been named chief curators for the upcoming 37th Bienal de São Paulo, scheduled for 2027. Meanwhile, Brazilian artist and filmmaker Marcello Dantas will take on the role of senior curator for the next Vancouver Biennale.

The 61st Venice Biennale recently experienced a shake-up as the jury, including prominent figures such as Elvira Dyangani Ose and Zoe Butt, resigned after a controversial decision to exclude Russia and Israel from award considerations.

In a significant leadership transition, Hedwig Fijen will step down as director of Manifesta, the pan-European biennial she co-founded in 1991. Emilia van Lynden will succeed her as general director, with Catherine Nichols as the artistic director in a new co-leadership model.

As the art community continues to evolve, these curatorial appointments and exhibitions signal a bright future for contemporary art. With a focus on inclusivity and diverse narratives, the upcoming events promise to enrich the cultural landscape and inspire future generations of artists and audiences alike.
