Coinbase, the prominent cryptocurrency exchange, announced on Tuesday that it will be reducing its workforce by approximately 700 employees, representing 14% of its total staff. This decision is part of a comprehensive restructuring initiative designed to adapt to market fluctuations and enhance operational efficiency through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) tools.
According to an internal communication from CEO Brian Armstrong, the restructuring aims to streamline the organizational hierarchy to just five layers beneath the CEO and COO. This change is intended to foster a more agile working environment.
The new structure will require managers to take on additional responsibilities, with the possibility of overseeing more than 15 direct reports. Furthermore, Coinbase plans to form smaller teams that leverage AI capabilities, experimenting with innovative "one-person teams" that will merge engineering, design, and product management functions.
Coinbase anticipates incurring severance costs ranging from $50 million to $60 million as a result of these layoffs, as indicated in a recent SEC filing.
In his message, Armstrong pointed to the current volatility in the cryptocurrency markets as a catalyst for reassessing the company's financial framework. He stated, "While we've navigated through market cycles before and emerged stronger, we are currently facing a downturn and must adjust our cost structure to ensure we come out of this phase leaner, faster, and more efficient."
He also emphasized the transformative impact of AI on their operations, noting, "AI is revolutionizing our workflows. Over the past year, I've observed engineers utilizing AI to accomplish in days what previously required weeks of teamwork. Non-technical teams are now able to produce code, and many of our processes are being automated. The speed and capability of focused, small teams are evolving rapidly, and this trend is accelerating daily. We must harness AI across all aspects of our work."
