Cognition raised $2 billion at a $48 billion valuation, underscoring investor confidence in AI coding tools and a fast-growing market with multiple winners.

Cognition Reaches $48 Billion Valuation as AI Coding Competition Expands

Cognition, the company behind the coding assistant Devin, has secured $2 billion in fresh funding at a $48 billion valuation. The round arrived just four months after its previous raise, which valued the startup at $26 billion, and was backed by Andreessen Horowitz, Accel, Founders Fund, General Catalyst, and Avenir.

The new valuation reflects a broader belief among investors that AI-powered coding is not shaping into a single-company market. Instead, multiple players appear positioned to build large businesses in one of artificial intelligence's most commercially important categories.

Cognition said its annualized run-rate revenue rose from $492 million in May to $900 million after the latest fundraise announcement. While the company did not detail its calculation, this figure is typically based on a monthly revenue snapshot multiplied across a year.

The company is also being compared with Cursor, another widely used coding assistant. Cursor had previously been discussed at a $50 billion valuation before later being acquired by SpaceX. At the time, Cursor's annualized revenue had already passed $2 billion, showing how quickly this market is scaling.

Cognition is also investing heavily in infrastructure, including an Nvidia server cluster leased at significant annual cost. At the same time, it is training its own model using open-source foundations, a move that could gradually reduce dependence on third-party systems from OpenAI and Anthropic and improve long-term efficiency.

Founded in 2024 by math prodigy Scott Wu, Cognition counts Mercedes-Benz, NASA, Goldman Sachs, and Citi among its enterprise customers. The company is expected to continue expanding rapidly as AI coding tools become more deeply embedded in professional workflows. This momentum suggests a future where software creation becomes faster, more accessible, and more competitive across the tech landscape.
