Claude, the AI model developed by Anthropic, is experiencing a remarkable increase in daily active users and app installations on mobile devices. This surge follows the company's decisive stance against allowing its technology to be used for mass surveillance or autonomous weaponry, which led to its designation as a supply-chain risk by the Pentagon.
Interestingly, this firm position seems to have resonated positively with consumers, as data indicates a growing preference for Claude's offerings. According to recent insights from Appfigures, the U.S. downloads of Claude's mobile app have surpassed those of ChatGPT, with figures showing 149,000 daily downloads compared to ChatGPT's 124,000 as of early March.
While download statistics provide a glimpse into new user installations, the number of active users reflects true engagement. Market intelligence firm Similarweb reported that Claude's app reached 11.3 million daily active users on March 2, marking a significant 183% increase since the beginning of the year, when it had around 4 million users. This growth trajectory positions Claude ahead of other AI applications like Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, although it still trails behind ChatGPT.
Claude's rapid rise can be attributed to its increased visibility following the high-profile negotiations with the Pentagon. If this momentum continues throughout March, Claude may further improve its ranking in the competitive AI landscape.
Despite these advancements, ChatGPT remains the leader in the market, boasting 250.5 million daily active users as of the same date. However, Claude is also witnessing growth in web traffic, with a 43% increase month-over-month in February and an impressive 297.7% year-over-year rise. This uptick may be occurring at the expense of ChatGPT, which saw a slight decline in web traffic during the same period.
Anthropic has been actively promoting Claude's achievements, highlighting that the AI chatbot is now attracting over 1 million sign-ups daily. It recently claimed the top spot on the U.S. App Store and maintains this position in 15 other countries, including Canada, Germany, and the U.K.
Furthermore, the company noted that Claude has consistently broken its own signup records daily since early last week across all available regions. This ongoing growth reflects the increasing interest and trust in AI solutions that prioritize ethical considerations.
