Claude is moving deeper into everyday productivity by adding the ability to read, draft, and send Gmail replies from a connected account. The update turns the chatbot from a helpful inbox assistant into a more active email partner for users who want to save time on routine communication.
Until now, Claude could review messages and summarize threads, but drafting and sending still required switching back and forth between apps. With the new Gmail connector, users can ask Claude to handle tasks directly inside the workflow, from checking who wrote most often in a day to replying to a specific thread with a chosen tone and level of detail.
The feature is currently tied to paid plans, and permissions can be adjusted for different actions such as searching, sending, or label editing. Users can choose whether Claude should never act, always ask first, or proceed automatically. That flexibility is designed to balance convenience with control.
A practical test for AI-assisted email
In testing, Claude showed strong context awareness. It could identify labels, dates, contacts, subject lines, and thread themes, and it handled summary requests with ease. It also managed to draft replies based on instructions, including messages that pulled in information from connected tools such as Google Drive.
Still, the experience also highlighted an important creative limit: AI-generated emails may not fully capture a person's natural voice. The system can be efficient and accurate, but users may still want to review tone, phrasing, and intent before letting it speak on their behalf.
