Christie's to Auction Iconic Items from Jim Irsay's Collection, Including Ringo's Drumset and Kurt Cobain's Guitar

Christie's will auction iconic memorabilia from Jim Irsay's collection, including Ringo Starr's drumset and Kurt Cobain's guitar, valued at $30 million.

This week, Christie's Los Angeles will showcase notable pieces from Jim Irsay's impressive collection of film, music, and sports memorabilia, ahead of their auction scheduled for March.

Located just a short drive from the Beverly Hills Hotel, where the Indianapolis Colts owner passed away last May, Irsay's collection features items that celebrate significant moments and legendary figures in American pop culture, including Jack Kerouac, Kurt Cobain, and Jackie Robinson.

According to musical instrument expert Kerry Keane, "Jim Irsay had a passion for all things that define the American experience." Highlights include Ringo Starr's drum head from The Beatles' memorable performance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, valued at approximately $1 million, and Sly Stallone's handwritten script notebook from Rocky, which Irsay acquired for $16,000 five years ago and is now estimated to reach $200,000.

Among the cinematic treasures available is Wilson, the beloved volleyball from Tom Hanks' film Castaway, expected to sell for between $60,000 and $80,000.

The memorabilia market has seen substantial growth over the past decade, partly due to new auction houses collaborating with prop companies. A record was set in 2024 when a pair of Judy Garland's ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz fetched $32.5 million. However, this surge has also led to a rise in counterfeit items, prompting Sotheby's to cancel two auctions over authenticity concerns.

Christie's will present around 350 items from Irsay's collection, with approximately 200 being guitars. "What could be more American than guitars?" Keane remarked. The total estimated value of the collection stands at about $30 million.

In 2022, Guitar.com magazine hailed Irsay's guitar collection as "the greatest on earth." A passionate player, he amassed a diverse array of instruments spanning nearly two centuries of American craftsmanship. His collection includes guitars played by legends like Prince, David Gilmour, and John Lennon. A standout piece is Jerry Garcia's "Tiger" guitar, valued at $1 million, which he famously used during his last performance with the Grateful Dead.

Beyond guitars, Irsay's collection features a trumpet belonging to Miles Davis, a piano from Elton John, and handwritten lyrics from Paul McCartney for "Hey Jude," estimated at $600,000. A rare poster from the 1959 Winter Party concert, featuring Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens, is also included, with an estimated value of $300,000.

Irsay's passion for collecting extends to literature and sports, with notable items such as Secretariat's saddle from the 1973 Triple Crown, valued at $1.5 million, and a game-used bat from Jackie Robinson, estimated at $250,000. Literary enthusiasts will be intrigued by Kerouac's 120-foot-long typescript scroll of On The Road, estimated at $2.5 million.

Although Irsay showcased his collection across ten U.S. cities from 2021 to 2024, he expressed little interest in selling, even for a billion dollars, as he continued to acquire new pieces. He purchased Kurt Cobain's 1966 Fender Mustang for $4.6 million, which is now estimated at $2.5 million. However, some high-profile items, including Muhammad Ali's championship belt and Bob Dylan's electric guitar, have been removed from the auction listing, raising questions about their authenticity.

"This collection has touched history," Lipman noted. "It's remarkable for such an extensive array of extraordinary material to become available at once."
