OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT with unlimited text chats for free users, a new Think button, and upgraded GPT-5.6 models for faster, smarter responses.

ChatGPT Expands Unlimited Text Access for Free Users

OpenAI is broadening access to ChatGPT by removing text-chat limits for all users, a move that arrives as the platform surpasses 1 billion weekly users. The update is designed to make everyday conversations with the assistant feel more fluid and accessible.

At the center of the rollout is GPT-5.6 Luna, which will become the default model for Free and Go users, replacing GPT-5.5. OpenAI says the new version is built to deliver a smoother experience for general use.

Free and Go users will also see a new Think button, giving them the option to request deeper reasoning for more complex questions. Even with the expanded text access, separate limits will remain in place for files, images, voice, and image generation.

For Plus and Pro subscribers, the company is introducing GPT-5.6 Sol, a model tuned for fast tasks such as research, advice, planning, writing, and decision support. OpenAI describes it as more concise and more resilient in its responses.

These users will also get a thinking slider that lets them adjust how much processing power the model applies to a prompt, depending on the task's complexity. According to OpenAI's internal evaluation, GPT-5.6 Luna and GPT-5.6 Sol reduced factual errors compared with GPT-5.5-Instant.

The upgraded GPT-5.6 Sol is available now for Plus and Pro users, while the broader changes for Free and Go users are rolling out this week. Unlimited text chats and the Think button are expected to reach them next week. The update points to a future where AI assistants become more adaptive, more personal, and more widely available.
