New York-based arts nonprofit ChaShaMa is preparing to reorganize its studio program at the Brooklyn Army Terminal, where it has supported artists with subsidized workspaces for nearly two decades.
The organization has been asked by the New York City Economic Development Corporation to vacate its 20,000-square-foot third-floor area in Building A by the end of October. The space is expected to be incorporated into the expansion plans of a neighboring tenant.
ChaShaMa currently operates 107 studios across two buildings at the Sunset Park campus. The transition will affect 29 artists working in the Building A wing, with tenants asked to prepare their materials for relocation before October 12.
Focus on a consolidated creative campus
At the same time, ChaShaMa is in discussions to lease space in Building B. The proposed location could add 70 new studios and bring more of the nonprofit's operations together within the historic waterfront complex.
Founded to make creative space more accessible in New York City, ChaShaMa has played a continuing role in helping artists maintain affordable places to develop projects, build practices and connect with a wider cultural community.
