Chanel and Guggenheim Introduce Transatlantic Curatorial Fellowship

Chanel has announced a groundbreaking partnership with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation to establish a new curatorial fellowship, bridging the vibrant art scenes of New York and Venice. This initiative, set to launch in the fall of 2026, will coincide with the prestigious Venice Biennale, further intertwining one of the art world's leading institutions with a dynamic international platform.

The Chanel Culture Fund Fellowship is designed for MA and PhD scholars focusing on collection studies and curatorial research. Each selected fellow will begin their journey at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, before transitioning to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, where they will engage with both museums' extensive archives and exhibitions.

Yana Peel, Chanel's president of arts, culture, and heritage, emphasized that this fellowship is part of a larger vision. "We aim to cultivate an ecosystem of support encompassing infrastructure, scholarship, and long-term investment in human intelligence," she stated. "Cultural life is not solely created by artists; it is also shaped by curators, researchers, and institutions."

This fellowship complements the existing International Fellowship at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, which immerses recent graduates in the museum's daily operations. Notable alumni, such as Nicholas Cullinan and Thomas Campbell, have benefited from this program. Flavia Frigeri, a former fellow, now serves as the Chanel Curator at London's National Portrait Gallery.

The new initiative targets advanced scholars, linking the Guggenheim's venues in New York and Venice into a cohesive curatorial experience. Each fellow will receive a stipend and travel support throughout the year-long program.

Peel views Venice as more than just a backdrop; she sees it as a vibrant hub for creativity and dialogue. "The Biennale attracts a remarkable concentration of people and ideas, but we want to ensure that the energy continues beyond the event," she remarked. "Our goal is to leave a lasting legacy that fosters scholarship and exchange in the city."

This partnership also reflects a historical connection between Gabrielle Chanel and Peggy Guggenheim, both of whom championed artists pushing the boundaries of their time. The fellowship embodies this spirit, evolving it into a structured institutional initiative.

According to Mariët Westermann, director of the Guggenheim, this fellowship will empower emerging curators to conduct original research and contribute valuable insights to both art history and the Guggenheim's visitors. "We are excited to see how this unique program will enrich our institution and the broader cultural landscape," she added.
