The Centre Pompidou's planned satellite museum in Jersey City is officially abandoned, marking a significant shift in the city's cultural landscape.

Centre Pompidou's Jersey City Museum Project Officially Abandoned

The anticipated Centre Pompidou satellite museum in Jersey City will not be realized, as confirmed by the city's Mayor on Wednesday.

Known as the Centre Pompidou x Jersey City, this museum was set to be the only North American extension of Paris's renowned modern and contemporary art museum, which is currently undergoing renovations.

The Pompidou already operates similar institutions in Shanghai and Málaga, with plans for additional locations in South Korea and Brazil. However, the most ambitious project is the Kanal museum in Brussels, which faces uncertainty due to ongoing governmental challenges in Belgium.

The Jersey City museum had been in development since its announcement in 2021, planned to occupy a historic 109-year-old building. Unfortunately, local political dynamics complicated the initiative.

In 2023, concerns arose among Republican lawmakers regarding the project's estimated cost of $200 million, which included $58 million sourced from taxpayers. Following months of political negotiations, funding was withdrawn, leading to the project's collapse.

Subsequently, the Pompidou attempted to revive the project with a new proposal for a larger museum in Jersey City, but it appears that this version will not come to fruition either.

Mayor James Solomon stated, "We will not be moving forward with the Pompidou project. It is officially dead."

The Centre Pompidou's official website lists its active satellite locations, but notably omits any mention of the Jersey City endeavor. An inquiry to a Pompidou representative for comments went unanswered.

The architectural firm OMA, which was set to design the Jersey City museum, still lists the project as "ongoing" on its website, but did not provide further comments when approached.

The Centre Pompidou x Jersey City initiative was originally championed by former Mayor Steve Fulop, who had urged the continuation of the project, cautioning that failure to do so would result in significant financial losses for the city.

Solomon had previously criticized the project, asserting that the prior administration had failed to present a viable funding strategy, leading to a projected budget shortfall of nearly $250 million over the next decade.

It remains uncertain how much Jersey City ultimately invested in the Pompidou project, a contentious issue throughout the planning stages. Reports indicate that the city allocated $11.5 million to the project, with OMA receiving nearly $12 million since the planning began in 2018.
