Bots Expected to Surpass Human Internet Traffic by 2027, Says Cloudflare CEO

Cloudflare's CEO predicts that by 2027, bot traffic will outpace human traffic online, emphasizing the need for new technologies to manage this shift effectively.

According to Matthew Prince, the CEO of Cloudflare, the dominance of bots on the internet is set to rise dramatically. In a recent discussion at the SXSW conference in Austin, Prince predicted that by 2027, traffic generated by artificial intelligence bots will outnumber that of human users.

He elaborated that the increasing prevalence of generative AI technologies allows bots to navigate significantly more websites than a human could in search of answers for user inquiries. For instance, while a person might visit five sites to research a digital camera, a bot could explore up to 5,000 sites, generating substantial traffic and demand on web infrastructure.

Historically, bots constituted roughly 20% of internet traffic, primarily driven by web crawlers like Google's. However, the landscape has shifted, with many bots now emerging from generative AI applications, which require vast amounts of data to function effectively. "With the rise of generative AI, we anticipate that by 2027, bot traffic will surpass human traffic," Prince stated.

To adapt to this evolving digital environment, Prince emphasized the necessity for new technological solutions, such as "sandboxes" for AI agents. These sandboxes would allow for the rapid deployment and removal of AI code to assist users with tasks like vacation planning.

He envisions a future where millions of these sandboxes could be created every second, facilitating more efficient interactions between users and AI. However, this surge in bot activity will demand robust physical infrastructure, including data centers and servers. Prince noted that during the COVID-19 pandemic, internet traffic surged dramatically, particularly from streaming services, leading to significant strain on some internet sectors.

Unlike the abrupt spikes seen during the pandemic, the current increase in internet traffic is gradual yet persistent. "We foresee continuous growth in internet usage without any foreseeable slowdowns," he remarked.

Cloudflare, known for its services that ensure website availability and security, is well-positioned to navigate this transformation. The company provides a range of solutions, including a content delivery network and DDoS protection, to help websites manage the challenges posed by escalating bot traffic.

Prince highlighted that the advent of AI represents a significant shift in how information is consumed, akin to previous transitions from desktop to mobile. "AI is not just an enhancement; it's a platform shift that will redefine our digital interactions," he concluded.
