Bluesky, the emerging social networking platform, has rolled out a new feature that supports group chats, marking a significant step in enhancing user engagement. This update, released on Thursday, aims to bolster its competitive stance against larger rivals like X, owned by Elon Musk.
While X recently launched its own messaging app, Bluesky is shifting its focus towards fostering community interactions. The latest version of the app (v1.124) introduces group chats, allowing users to connect more intimately within smaller circles rather than broadcasting messages to a broad audience.
This strategic pivot comes as Bluesky's user growth has plateaued, reaching approximately 44.8 million registered users, compared to X's impressive 600 million monthly active users. To attract new users, Bluesky recognizes the importance of diversifying social connections and enhancing the overall user experience.
The new group chat feature permits up to 50 participants, which is fewer than X's capacity for 1,000 members. However, Bluesky is open to expanding this limit in future updates. Group chat creators can manage their spaces, controlling participation and generating invite links for broader sharing.
Participants will have the ability to customize their invitation settings, choosing whether anyone, only those they follow, or no one can invite them to chats. Initially, sharing media within these groups is not supported, as Bluesky is prioritizing safety and moderation systems.
In a recent discussion, Bluesky's head of product, Alex Benzer, emphasized the platform's commitment to creating community-oriented features. He envisions Bluesky evolving into a space where users can form smaller communities focused on shared interests, contrasting with the vastness of the current platform.
Benzer stated, "Today, Bluesky is one big space. Communities will be smaller spaces inside that where you can go deeper and hang out with people who care about the same stuff." This approach aims to provide users with more control over their online experiences, particularly as other platforms like X are retracting community features due to low engagement.
Bluesky's community features will enable users to create unique handles that serve as URLs, offering options for public, invite-only, or private settings. This development positions Bluesky as a potential alternative for users seeking more autonomy away from traditional tech giants.
