The FDA has approved bemotrizinol for U.S. sunscreens, introducing a new filter for broad UVA and UVB coverage in products such as La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVDefense SPF 50.

BEMT Sunscreen Filter Reaches the U.S. After FDA Approval

The U.S. has approved bemotrizinol (BEMT) for use in sunscreen, opening the door to products featuring a filter long used in Europe, Asia and Australia. The FDA's decision marks the first approval of a new sunscreen filter in the country since 1999.

One of the early U.S. products to include BEMT is La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVDefense SPF 50. The filter absorbs both UVA and UVB rays and is photostable, meaning it holds up under sunlight. The formula also contains other chemical UV filters and is fragrance-free.

Everyday feel and use

A month-long personal trial found the sunscreen quick to absorb, lightweight and free of a visible white cast. Its texture was described as closer to a moisturizer than a typical sunscreen. The user reported no noticeable redness while wearing it, though a brief personal trial cannot establish long-term protection or effectiveness.

One practical limitation: the product is not water- or sweat-resistant, so it may not suit swimming or strenuous exercise. Its fast-absorbing, fragrance-free formula may appeal to people seeking a comfortable option for everyday wear.

Wider access to newer sunscreen filters could broaden product choices and encourage more consistent sun protection in the years ahead.
