Belinda Tanoto's Art Foundation Launches Innovative Exhibition to Enrich Singapore's Art Landscape

A former assembly hall from the 1960s has transformed into an unexpected venue for contemporary art in Singapore, thanks to collector Belinda Tanoto. This unique pop-up location hosted the inaugural exhibition of the newly established Tanoto Art Foundation (TAF).

Tanoto expressed her vision, stating, "We intentionally chose a space that feels approachable rather than intimidating. Breaking down barriers to art access is central to our mission." This heritage site, nestled within a vibrant lifestyle complex in River Valley, aims to create an inclusive art experience.

Founded a little over a year ago, TAF aspires to foster the growing art scene in Southeast Asia while facilitating cross-border dialogues. "We aim to be an agile art organization that evolves with our community," Tanoto noted, appreciating the flexibility that comes with not having a permanent space. "This allows us to experiment with various formats."

The exhibition, titled "Rituals of Perception," runs until March 1 at the New Bahru School Hall. It investigates themes of materiality in our fast-paced digital world, showcasing over 50 works from 23 artists, predominantly from the Global South. TAF's artistic director, Xiaoyu Weng, highlighted that the exhibition emerged from a year-long research process, including a symposium focused on cultivating an organization with a soul.

Weng elaborated that the exhibition not only features diverse material practices but also emphasizes the significance of tactile experiences that reclaim time, memory, and embodied knowledge. Artworks made from clay, cement, and silk threads are thoughtfully juxtaposed with technology-driven pieces, including AI and 3D printing. For instance, Anicka Yi's innovative kelp sculptures housing animatronic insects contrast with Pan Caoyuan's lustrous cosmological paintings.

The exhibition opens with a site-specific installation by Hong Kong artist Tsang Kin-wah, titled THE E PLE AND THE P O LE ALONE. This thought-provoking piece, inspired by political statements, encourages individual thought and agency. Additionally, Trisha Baga's immersive video MORE invites viewers into a surreal exploration of life's complexities.

Argentinian artist Carolina Fusilier's installation Las Immortalistas V further delves into technology's influence on society through a whimsical lens. Meanwhile, artists from mainland China, such as Tong Wenmin, engage with pressing socio-political themes through evocative performances.

In Singapore, where the contemporary art scene has largely been shaped by governmental initiatives, TAF's privately organized exhibition stands out. Tanoto emphasized the importance of education in cultivating a culture of art appreciation, noting that visiting galleries is still a relatively new concept in Southeast Asia.

Looking ahead, Tanoto envisions establishing a permanent space for TAF while continuing to host significant projects annually, particularly aligned with Singapore Art Week. "We aim to invigorate the Southeast Asian art ecosystem," she remarked, highlighting the potential for art to serve as an engaging alternative to traditional weekend activities.
