Behind the Scenes at Milan's Olympic Training Center

Explore the cutting-edge training facilities for Olympians in Milan, showcasing advanced equipment and innovative training methods to enhance athletic performance.

Behind the Scenes at Milan's Olympic Training Center

WHILE THE OLYMPIC events are in full swing across Italy, athletes must maintain their competitive edge. To facilitate this, the venues for the Milano-Cortina Games--including Milan, Cortina, Livigno, and Predazzo--feature state-of-the-art training facilities. These centers are equipped for team members to engage in weightlifting, treadmill running, and sport-specific workouts.

These facilities offer Olympians an experience that surpasses your typical gym, yet you'll find many familiar elements. Although you may not find the latest Technogym treadmills in your local gym, the overall design and lighting may remind you of your own training spaces.

The MH team in Italy had the opportunity to explore one of these training centers, gaining insights into how Olympians prepare for their pursuit of gold. "Not everyone trains in this manner, but there is much we can learn from these athletes that can enhance our own training routines," explains fitness director Ebenezer Samuel, C.S.C.S. Here are his key insights from the Olympic fitness facilities tour.

Machines Are Essential for Olympians

When considering performance training, images of turf sprints and Olympic lifts often come to mind. These elements are crucial for athletes who focus on developing their force production.

Strength and muscle development play a vital role in enhancing force production, making them essential for athletes. Machines provide a safe environment for building strength, allowing athletes to push their limits without compromising their technique. The training center is equipped with a variety of Technogym machines, including the popular Belt Squat, and several AI-powered machines designed for athlete assessments.

The Enduring Popularity of Pilates

The training center features several Technogym Reformers, highlighting the growing acceptance of Pilates among athletes. Once considered a trendy boutique exercise, Pilates is now recognized for its effectiveness in developing the strength and stability of smaller muscle groups.

Cardio Training for All Athletes

Many Winter Games competitors, such as downhill skiers and figure skaters, may only exert energy in short bursts, yet they still prioritize cardiovascular training to enhance their endurance.

Representatives from Technogym noted a significant demand for treadmills, indicating their importance in the training regimen, while the stationary bike area was also bustling with activity.

Kettlebells: A Limited Role for Olympians

Despite the spacious facility, kettlebells were sparsely available, with only a few sets not exceeding 53 pounds. While kettlebells can be beneficial for power training, athletes often have more effective options for building strength and explosiveness.
