The Bayeux Tapestry will be presented in a new format when it returns to Normandy after its 10-month stay in London. Rather than hanging vertically as it did previously at the Bayeux Museum, the 11th-century embroidered work will be shown in its full length on a slanted table.
The museum has been considering a change from its decades-old suspension system for around 10 years. The new arrangement is intended to help preserve the historic textile while giving visitors a different way to experience it.
In London, the tapestry has been displayed flat in a darkened gallery at the British Museum. The Bayeux Museum, currently undergoing renovations, is scheduled to reopen in October 2027. The 220-foot-long work is expected to remain on view in London until July 11, 2027.
The updated presentation points to how thoughtful display design can support both the long-term care of cultural treasures and public access to them.
