Basel's House of Electronic Arts Collaborates with Tezos Foundation to Safeguard Digital Art

The House of Electronic Arts (HEK) in Basel, a museum dedicated to digital culture, media art, and technology, has partnered with the Tezos Foundation to enhance the museum experience through blockchain technology. This year-long collaboration aims to merge virtual and physical exhibitions, alongside workshops and initiatives that focus on the preservation of digital art.

This partnership builds on a previous relationship established in 2022, when HEK committed to utilizing blockchain and Web3 to support digital art and media. The Tezos ecosystem empowers artists, curators, and institutions to create, display, sell, and preserve artworks on the blockchain.

According to Aleksandra Artamonovskaja, head of art at TriliTech--Tezos' research and development hub--this collaboration is centered around two significant exhibitions on HEK's online platform, virtual.hek, as well as an outdoor presentation during Art Basel. Six international artists will showcase their blockchain-based works, released in partnership with Objkt, a Tezos blockchain marketplace. Artamonovskaja emphasized the importance of creating hybrid experiences that bring together exceptional talent.

The initiative aims to create a "museum without walls," allowing curators to highlight artists who may not have traditional access to institutional spaces. The outdoor presentation in Basel further extends this experience to the public. Additionally, on-site kiosks and workshops will provide visitors with hands-on learning opportunities regarding NFTs, blockchain, and digital ownership, which Artamonovskaja identifies as vital for fostering understanding and engagement.

Sustainability and long-term impact are also central to this partnership. HEK is involved in the EU COST Action EMBARK, leading an international training program on NFT preservation at the ZKM museum in Karlsruhe, Germany. This initiative seeks to equip professionals with the necessary skills to maintain blockchain-based art over time, addressing a significant concern in the digital art landscape.

Artamonovskaja expressed enthusiasm for the community and dialogue that blockchain fosters, noting that many collectors on Tezos platforms are artists themselves, promoting a culture of mutual support. This collaborative model is rare in other art markets and encourages deeper connections and cultural exchanges.

Furthermore, the HEK-Tezos partnership aligns with TriliTech's mission to bridge the gap between digital and physical art globally. Artamonovskaja and her team are actively organizing international meetups, exhibitions, and educational programs to showcase the future of digital art as an experiential and institutionalized medium. For instance, last November, they hosted Art on Tezos Berlin, a three-day event celebrating digital and generative art on the Tezos blockchain.

While Artamonovskaja remains optimistic about the future of digital art, she acknowledges the need for a balanced approach as the market evolves. She believes that recent developments signal a consolidation phase, where a more structured appreciation for digital art is emerging, evidenced by initiatives like the construction of the Digital Art Museum in Hamburg.
