Bananas in Smoothies Do Not Erase Nutrients, Study Context Shows

A new look at smoothie science shows bananas do not erase overall nutrition, even if they affect one cocoa antioxidant in a specific lab study.

Bananas in Smoothies Do Not Erase Nutrients, Study Context Shows

Bananas have long been a favorite smoothie ingredient for their natural sweetness and creamy texture. Yet a recent wave of online claims suggested they might cancel out the benefits of berries. The science tells a more specific story.

What the research actually examined

A 2023 study in Food & Function looked at how banana enzymes interact with a particular antioxidant, (-)-epicatechin, found in cocoa extract. In a small trial with eight healthy volunteers, researchers compared a banana-based smoothie, a berry smoothie with cocoa extract, and a cocoa capsule with milk.

The results showed that the banana smoothie led to lower blood levels of epicatechin-related compounds than the other test drinks. That finding points to the activity of polyphenol oxidase, an enzyme naturally present in bananas, but it does not mean bananas "destroy" all antioxidants in fruit blends.

Why the smoothie myth overreaches

The study did not test bananas with berries in a real-world smoothie recipe, and it did not measure the full nutritional value of mixed fruit blends. It focused on one compound in cocoa, not the broad range of vitamins, fiber, and plant compounds found in everyday smoothies.

Bananas still bring useful nutrition to the glass, including fiber, carbohydrates, vitamin B6, vitamin C, and magnesium. For most people, they remain a practical way to add balance, flavor, and texture to a smoothie.

A better way to think about flavon-3-ols

If the goal is to increase flavon-3-ol intake, tea is a stronger source than fruit smoothies. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has noted potential benefits from about 400 milligrams per day, an amount that can be reached with a few cups of green or black tea.

In short, bananas are not a threat to smoothie nutrition; they are simply one ingredient in a much larger nutritional picture. As nutrition science becomes more precise, everyday food choices may become easier to understand and smarter to personalize.
