Ayala Foundation Appoints Reuben Keehan as Artistic Director of Kontempo Arts Center

The Ayala Foundation has appointed Reuben Keehan as the artistic director for Kontempo, a new contemporary arts center in Manila, enhancing the region's cultural landscape.

The Ayala Foundation, the philanthropic branch of the Philippines' largest business group, has officially announced the appointment of Reuben Keehan as the new artistic director for Kontempo, a contemporary art venue set to debut in Manila.

Designed by Kulapat Yantrasat, the visionary behind the new Rockefeller Wing at the Met, Kontempo will feature over 26,000 square feet dedicated to exhibitions across three galleries. Additionally, nearly four acres of landscaped green space will be created for sculptures, art installations, and gardens. This innovative center will be situated in Circuit Makati, an area undergoing significant redevelopment by Ayala Land, which will eventually include a shopping mall, theater, hotels, skyscrapers, and outdoor sports facilities.

Previously, Keehan was associated with the Queensland Art Gallery / Gallery of Modern Art in Australia, where he held the position of contemporary art curator. He has also curated the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art since its seventh edition in 2013.

"After an extensive global search, we are thrilled to have Reuben join us to shape and enhance our institution and its programming," stated Fernando Zobel de Ayala, chairman of the Ayala Foundation. "His appointment is a testament to our commitment to create an institution deeply rooted in the Philippines, engaged with its communities, and in active dialogue with the global art scene. We envision Kontempo as a nurturing space for curiosity and creativity, where individuals of all ages can connect with contemporary culture through a diverse array of artistic expressions."

Zobel de Ayala, a prominent art collector in the region, has held significant leadership roles within the Ayala Corporation.

Kontempo marks the latest addition to the Ayala Foundation's contributions to the arts, following the establishment of the Ayala Museum in 1967, which primarily focuses on archaeological and historical artifacts.

This week, the country's premier art fair, Art Fair Philippines, will launch its 2026 edition at Circuit Makati for the first time.
