The highly anticipated Friends Fair in Austin is set to make its return this May, featuring an exciting lineup of 17 exhibitors, up from last year's 10. The event will kick off with an opening preview on May 7, followed by public access on May 8 and 9, hosted at the stylish Loren Hotel Austin.
Last year's inaugural fair was a collaborative effort among five local galleries, attracting over 2,000 visitors and showcasing the vibrant art scene in Austin. This year, four of the original galleries, including Martha's and McLennon Pen Co., will be back, alongside several newcomers such as Nature of Things from Dallas and Tyler Park Presents from Los Angeles.
Ricky Morales, a co-founder of the fair and co-owner of Martha's, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "It means a lot to me for this event to be successful. Austin has an amazing art community, and the attention we received last year emphasized that our city can continue to thrive as an art hub."
Among the notable additions this year, two rooms will be dedicated to non-commercial presentations. Co-Lab Projects, a nonprofit run by artists, will utilize one space, while the other will showcase an exhibition featuring second-year MFA students from the University of Texas at Austin, curated by their professors.
Jill McLennon, founder of McLennon Pen Co., highlighted the fair's focus on ensuring participant satisfaction and strong sales, noting, "We were thrilled that so many galleries expressed interest in returning. Expanding the fair felt like a natural next step, adding more voices and cities without growing too quickly."
