Audible Introduces 'Read & Listen' Feature to Sync Ebooks with Audiobooks

In a recent move to enhance the reading experience, Audible, owned by Amazon, has unveiled a new feature called "Read & Listen." This innovative addition allows users to synchronize their Kindle ebooks with audiobooks, enabling a seamless transition between reading and listening.

Announced on Wednesday, this feature is designed for those who possess both the ebook and audiobook versions of a title within their Audible and Kindle libraries. While listening to the audiobook, readers can follow along with the text, which is highlighted in real-time to match the narration. This integration aims to enrich engagement with the material, making it particularly beneficial for learners and avid readers alike.

Previously, the Kindle app offered a similar capability, allowing users to switch between the Audible and ebook formats if both had been purchased. However, this marks the first time such functionality is available directly within the Audible app. To encourage adoption, Audible will provide discounted audiobook options for customers who already own the corresponding ebook.

At launch, the "Read & Listen" feature will support hundreds of thousands of titles across multiple languages, including English, German, Spanish, Italian, and French. Initially, it will be available in the U.S., with plans to expand to the U.K., Australia, and Germany in the coming months.

Audible's app will automatically identify which Kindle ebooks have audiobook counterparts, making it easier for users to discover compatible titles. This feature is expected to resonate well with customers who enjoy alternating between reading and listening, particularly those who appreciate the nuances of a professional narration.

Research indicates that combining reading with listening can enhance focus and comprehension, leading to a richer understanding of the content. Audible reports that users who engage with both formats consume nearly double the content compared to those who only listen to audiobooks.

The feature is anticipated to be especially valuable for students, language learners, and anyone looking to accelerate their reading pace. Additionally, it offers a unique advantage for those who prefer the auditory experience of a book being narrated, which can be particularly helpful in understanding character names and pronunciations in complex narratives.

"Audiobooks count as reading," stated Andy Tsao, Chief Product Officer at Audible. "With Read & Listen, book lovers can now enjoy the best of both worlds. Whether you're studying, learning a new language, or immersing yourself in a story, you no longer have to choose between formats."

It's important to note that the introduction of this feature will not affect the royalty payments to publishers, ensuring that the ecosystem remains healthy.
