Artists Reimagine Creative Materials Through Living, Local Resources

Brooklyn artists at Genspace explore natural pigments, algae yarn and alternative clay, opening new pathways for sustainable and science-led art production.

Artists Reimagine Creative Materials Through Living, Local Resources

A group of artists at Brooklyn's Genspace community biology lab is exploring how art can be made with renewable, biodegradable and locally sourced materials. Their work brings together scientific experimentation and creative practice, proposing fresh alternatives to conventional synthetic supplies.

Presented at the Source Material bioart exhibition in Queens, the projects highlighted natural pigments, algae-based yarns and alternative clay formulations. Rather than simply replicating store-bought paints or fibers, the artists examine how biological materials can introduce new textures, colors and working methods.

Color From Local Ecosystems

Artist Becca Rodriguez focuses on pigments derived from plants and other organic matter found in nearby environments. Her research recalls longstanding artistic traditions in which color came from minerals, roots, leaves and insects before industrial paint production became widespread.

Natural pigments can carry distinctive visual qualities while encouraging artists to pay closer attention to seasonal change, material origins and the ecosystems surrounding their studios. This approach also recognizes the cultural knowledge connected to traditional color-making practices across many communities.

The wider Genspace initiative positions art-making as a collaborative field where biology, design and local knowledge can meet. By testing materials such as algae fibers and plant-based dyes, participating artists are expanding the vocabulary of contemporary art while considering the lifecycle of the objects they create.

As bio-based materials become more accessible, they may help shape a future in which creative production is more closely connected to ecological awareness, experimentation and community-led innovation.
