Artist, journalist and activist Emma Shapiro has launched a legal challenge after Instagram permanently removed her account @nipeople, a move that has reignited debate over artistic freedom on digital platforms.
The account was part of Exposure Therapy, a project started in 2017 that uses repeated imagery of female nipples to question how bodies are sexualized and regulated in public life. Through the work, Shapiro aimed to examine where expression ends and censorship begins.
According to the case, Meta first suspended the account after a short video showing a utility pole covered with the project's stickers, then deleted it after an appeal was submitted. Shapiro, who lives in Spain, is now working with Avant-Garde Lawyers to argue that the platform did not meet obligations under the European Union's Digital Services Act.
The complaint says the company did not provide a clear explanation, did not offer an effective internal review process, and applied a permanent sanction without enough proportionality. The case is being examined through European dispute-resolution channels and by Spain's digital regulator, the CNMC.
Shapiro says the issue reaches beyond one account, pointing to the wider impact of platform decisions on artists, researchers and creators who depend on digital spaces to share work and build audiences. Her advocacy also connects to Don't Delete Art, a project that documents artistic censorship online.
As digital platforms continue to shape cultural visibility, this case may help define how creative expression is protected in the next era of online publishing.
