The vibrant intersection of art and sports is on full display in New York and New Jersey, where a stunning initiative called Art of the Game has commissioned 23 contemporary artists to create large-scale soccer ball sculptures. This project, which celebrates the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, marks a significant collaboration that brings together renowned talents from the art world.
Organized by ARTS 14C, a nonprofit organization based in Jersey City, New Jersey, the initiative aims to enrich public spaces while highlighting the creativity of artists. Diana Burroughs, the executive director of ARTS 14C, shared her deep connection with the late Agnes Gund, a prominent art collector and philanthropist who championed this project. Burroughs expressed her gratitude for Gund's support, stating, "I knew I would not have to convince [Gund] of the idea's merits."
The first artist to participate was Katherine Bernhardt, whose vibrant soccer ball is now prominently displayed at Rockefeller Plaza. Following her, other notable artists, including Futura 2000, Edgar Heap of Birds, and Taína H. Cruz, have contributed their unique designs, transforming public areas into interactive art exhibitions.
Fabricated at Powerhouse Arts in Brooklyn, these sculptures will be showcased in various parks and plazas throughout the summer, with some remaining on permanent display. From July 2 to 17, five selected artworks will be featured in an online auction at Christie's, with proceeds benefiting both the artists and ARTS 14C, as well as Studio in a School, a nonprofit established by Gund.
This initiative not only enhances the cultural landscape of New York and New Jersey but also fosters a sense of community engagement through art and sports. As these sculptures grace the streets, they invite public interaction and appreciation, celebrating the spirit of the World Cup in a uniquely artistic manner.
As we look to the future, projects like Art of the Game illustrate the potential for art to inspire and unite communities, paving the way for more innovative collaborations between different fields.
