In an unprecedented display of unity within the art community, numerous galleries in New York are set to close their doors on Friday, January 30. This action is part of a broader nationwide strike aimed at protesting the expansion of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities. The initiative comes in response to increasing global concerns regarding the use of excessive force against protesters and allegations that federal actions undermine fundamental rights, including free speech and due process.
Prominent galleries, including Pace Gallery, David Zwirner, Almine Rech, and others, will join forces with various cultural institutions to express their opposition to the immigration policies of the current administration. This movement has gained momentum particularly following tragic incidents in Minneapolis involving federal agents.
Reports of federal overreach, including the detention of citizens and Native Americans, as well as the exclusion of lawmakers from ICE facilities, have sparked widespread outrage. This collective response is anticipated to culminate in one of the largest civilian mobilizations in recent American history.
Scott Ogden from Shrine Gallery remarked on the significant participation from the typically apolitical art sector, stating, "I have not seen such widespread unity among galleries before."
Alexander Gray from Alexander Gray Associates drew parallels to the Day With(out) Art event from 1989, highlighting the challenges of mobilizing without modern technology. He noted the palpable energy in Minneapolis, emphasizing the profound impact recent immigration policies have had on local communities.
Additionally, galleries across the globe are joining in this act of solidarity. Brigitte Mulholland, a gallery owner in Paris, expressed her commitment to the cause, stating her intention to refrain from spending money with US companies in support of the strike.
