Art and Power Unite in New York City

Explore the vibrant intersection of art and power in New York City, featuring exhibitions that inspire and provoke thought about history and society.

Some may label it as arrogance or a narrow perspective, but there's a prevailing sentiment that New York City is at the center of the universe. This thought crossed my mind repeatedly while I explored various captivating exhibitions with Senior Editor Valentina Di Liscia, as we curated a guide to the must-see attractions in the city right now. I reflected not only on the diverse themes presented--spanning from the Amazon River and numerous national revolutions to three millennia of narrative art--but also on the historical and societal contexts that shape these works: What injustices or potential for redemption lie beneath the surface of our current reality?

This week, the New York art scene faces significant challenges that threaten its core integrity, implicating notable figures such as David A. Ross, the former head of the Whitney Museum, and Leon Black, who remains on the board at MoMA. It's disheartening to engage with a system that feels compromised.

Yet, a striking moment from Alison Nguyen's film at Storefront for Art and Architecture lingers in my thoughts. Against the backdrop of Manhattan's City Hall, the artist shoots arrows at an unseen target, a seemingly small act of defiance against vast networks of power. However, it embodies a sense of hope: persistence may lead to meaningful impact.
