Apple has asked a court for a preliminary injunction in its trade secrets dispute with OpenAI, seeking to limit any product development that could rely on Apple technology. The company says its ongoing review suggests the issue may involve more former employees than initially identified.
In a new filing, Apple is requesting expedited discovery from two accused former employees, Chang Liu and Tang Yew Tan, along with OpenAI, its foundation, and the device startup io, co-founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive.
Apple says its investigation has uncovered signs that 11 additional former employees may have acted as witnesses or played a role in the matter. The filing also points to examples it says involve confidential information tied to unannounced products and internal documents.
OpenAI responded by rejecting Apple's claims, saying the request is based on inaccurate information and that it does not possess Apple trade secrets. The company also said it remains focused on building new products and technologies.
The case now centers on how courts will balance intellectual property protection with the fast-moving pace of AI hardware and product innovation. Its outcome could help define future standards for collaboration, competition, and responsible development across the tech industry.
