Apple's new Watch Ultra 4 refines the company's adventure-focused smartwatch formula with upgraded health tracking, improved battery performance and a more responsive processing platform.
A redesigned health sensing system
The biggest update is Apple's new Health Sensing System, designed to increase contact with the wrist and improve optical heart-rate readings. The watch now refreshes background heart-rate data every five seconds, compared with longer intervals on earlier generations.
This continuous flow also supports more frequent heart rate variability estimates. Apple has introduced two HRV views: Recovery HRV for daily wellness patterns and overall HRV for longer-term cardiovascular trends. These readings contribute to the new Readiness feature, which combines fitness, vital signs and sleep information into a daily score from one to 10.
Performance and smarter everyday tools
Powered by the S11 chip, the Ultra 4 delivers smoother navigation, expanded Siri functions and a new step-counting display option. New audio-based tools include sound recognition for accessibility and wrist-based music identification.
Apple also plans to introduce additional health features later in the year, including Health Age and expanded longevity insights. These tools aim to turn daily activity, sleep and recovery data into clearer personal trends rather than isolated measurements.
Battery built for active routines
Apple rates the Ultra 4 for up to 50 hours of standard use and up to 84 hours in Low Power Mode. The company also says a 15-minute charge can provide up to 18 hours of use, supporting users who track sleep, workouts and outdoor activity across multiple days.
The 49 mm case, dual-frequency GPS and satellite emergency capabilities continue to distinguish the Ultra line from the Apple Watch Series 12, although both models now share many of the same core health functions. The Ultra 4 is positioned for users who value a larger design, extended battery life and outdoor-focused tools.
As wearable sensors become more continuous and context-aware, devices like the Apple Watch Ultra 4 could help make everyday health and performance data more actionable over time.
