Apple has introduced an updated HomePod mini, adding a new chip, expanded smart-home capabilities and a planned Siri AI upgrade. The speaker is priced at $149, $50 above the original model's launch price.
Its S10 chip is designed to improve dynamic range, volume and overall acoustic performance. The speaker can also control compatible smart-home devices by voice and detect sounds such as a smoke alarm, sending an alert to a user's phone.
More connected listening
Apple says a future software update will bring Siri AI features, including multi-turn conversations. The company has not announced when the updated assistant will arrive.
The new model can be paired with Apple TV 4K to create a four-speaker home entertainment setup. It can also serve as the default speaker for a Mac during calls or music playback.
A feature called Sound Glow adds a visual element to listening, illuminating the speaker's top in colors inspired by album artwork and pulsing with the music. Rain and ocean-wave soundscapes can also trigger animations.
The HomePod mini will come in pink, green, blue, white and midnight. Pre-orders open today, with availability beginning October 30. Its tighter integration of sound, smart-home controls and visual effects points toward increasingly connected home experiences.
