Apple Sets New Deadline for Patreon Creators to Transition to In-App Purchases

Apple has mandated that Patreon creators transition to in-app purchases by November 2026, raising concerns over business stability for content creators.

Patreon, the well-known creator platform, is responding to Apple's recent directive requiring all creators to adopt a subscription billing model by November 1, 2026. This mandate has raised concerns among creators who are still utilizing Patreon's previous billing systems.

Although the changes will primarily affect a small percentage of creators--approximately 4%--who have not yet transitioned, Patreon emphasizes that Apple's inconsistent policy shifts hinder the ability of creators to establish sustainable businesses.

This new requirement comes as part of Apple's 2024 announcement regarding subscription billing modifications. The tech giant mandated that by November 2025, Patreon must migrate all creators to utilize its in-app purchase system, or face potential removal from the App Store. Apple justified this move by claiming that Patreon's management of billing for certain subscriptions circumvented its commission structure.

To its credit, Apple has provided ample time for Patreon to transition its users to the in-app purchase model. Initially, Patreon indicated it would begin this transition in November 2024, allowing creators the option to adjust their subscription rates to accommodate Apple's fees. Additionally, creators could postpone the changes until November 2025 if needed. However, until they comply with Apple's requirements, they would be unable to offer subscriptions through the app.

Recently, Patreon capitalized on more flexible App Store guidelines, resulting from a U.S. court ruling, allowing creators to process web payments through links in the app. At that time, the earlier November 2025 deadline was lifted, giving creators additional time to strategize regarding their subscription models.

However, the recent reinstatement of the November 2026 deadline has created confusion, especially as Patreon had previously paused the transition process for its creators.

While Patreon is adhering to Apple's directive, it has expressed dissatisfaction with the notion that a tech giant should dictate how creators manage their businesses. "We strongly disagree with this decision," the company stated in a blog post, emphasizing the need for stability and clarity for creators to thrive.

Creators can find more information about the transition plan through Patreon's resources. The platform has also developed tools to assist with these changes, including a benefit eligibility tool, tier repricing tools, and options for annual memberships, expected to be available before the November 2026 deadline.
