iOS users can now enjoy an additional layer of privacy regarding the sharing of their location data. The new setting, Limit Precise Location, restricts certain Apple devices from disclosing specific locations to cellular providers.
While sharing precise location information can be beneficial, especially when using navigation apps, many users may prefer not to continuously transmit their exact address to their mobile carrier, where it could potentially be exploited. By activating the Limit Precise Location feature, your iOS device will instead share a broader geographical area.
Privacy Risks Associated with Precise Location Sharing
As highlighted by various tech experts, sharing precise location data poses significant privacy and security risks. Cellular networks have been targeted by cybercriminals, jeopardizing sensitive user information. Additionally, surveillance companies and law enforcement might utilize the location data transmitted through cellular networks for real-time tracking.
Users already have the ability to disable precise location sharing for specific apps on both iOS and Android platforms, particularly for applications that do not require GPS coordinates for their functionality. This option allows individuals to prevent companies from acquiring and monetizing their exact location data when a general area suffices. It's important to note that the Limit Precise Location setting does not alter these app-specific configurations.
Currently, this feature is accessible only on select Apple devices, including the iPhone Air, iPhone 16e, and iPad Pro (M5) Wi-Fi + Cellular, operating on iOS 26.3 and available through a limited number of global carriers:
U.S.: Boost Mobile
UK: EE, BT
Germany: Telekom
Thailand: AIS, True
Apple assures that even with this setting activated, emergency responders will still be able to accurately determine a user's location during emergency calls.
Steps to Disable Precise Location Sharing
If you possess a compatible device with an associated carrier, navigate to Settings > Cellular, then select Cellular Data Options (you may need to choose the specific line under SIMs if applicable). Scroll down and toggle off the Limit Precise Location sharing option.
