Apple Introduces AI-Powered Workflows in Shortcuts App

Apple has enhanced its Shortcuts app with artificial intelligence, making it more user-friendly in iOS 27. Originally designed for tech-savvy users to automate tasks and create workflows, the updated version allows anyone to simply describe their desired action.

This new capability is driven by Apple Intelligence, which interprets natural language prompts to determine the necessary steps for automation. Celcia Dantas, Senior Manager of Home Software Product Marketing, acknowledged the previous complexity of creating shortcuts during her presentation at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference. She emphasized that the AI integration simplifies the process, enabling users without technical expertise to engage with the app more effectively.

For instance, Dantas illustrated a practical application where a user could create a shortcut to automatically alert their partner when leaving work, including an estimated time of arrival. Instead of navigating through various app actions and variables, users can simply input their request, and Shortcuts will compile the required actions to execute the automation. In this scenario, the app would access a saved address, calculate the ETA using Apple Maps, and send a message notification.

Moreover, users have the flexibility to modify their shortcuts by describing the changes they wish to implement. For example, after setting up the "leaving work" shortcut, a user could add a command to play their favorite podcast on the way home.

The revamped Shortcuts app is set to launch with iOS 27 later this fall, promising to open new avenues for automation and personalization in everyday tasks.
