Apple has reached a significant milestone, now producing 25% of its iPhones in India, a target predicted by JPMorgan back in 2022. This strategic move is part of Apple's broader initiative to lessen its dependence on China, as reported by Bloomberg.
In the previous year, India contributed to the production of approximately 55 million iPhones out of a global total of around 220 million to 230 million. Apple has been proactive in solidifying its commitment to Indian manufacturing, having commenced production of the entire iPhone 17 lineup in India ahead of its launch last September. According to CEO Tim Cook, a significant portion of U.S. demand is now being met with iPhones made in India.
This transition gained momentum in 2025, driven by uncertainties in China stemming from fluctuating U.S. tariff regulations, prompting Apple to diversify its production across various nations. The situation was critical enough that former President Donald Trump cautioned Cook against expanding operations in India during a business summit in Doha.
India is also emerging as a crucial market for Apple. Last year, the company shipped 14 million units in the region, marking a 9% increase from the previous year, according to analysis from Counterpoint. Bloomberg highlighted that total iPhone sales in India exceeded $9 billion last year, following a significant retail expansion. Furthermore, Apple is reportedly negotiating to introduce Apple Pay in India this year and recently opened its sixth store in the country.
