Anthropic May Require ID Checks for Some Claude Users

Anthropic has updated Claude's privacy policy to allow age and identity verification for some users, adding a new layer of platform integrity and compliance.

Anthropic May Require ID Checks for Some Claude Users

Anthropic has updated its privacy policy to say that Claude users may be asked to confirm their age or identity in specific cases by uploading government-issued documents. The company says the step is part of its appeal and platform-integrity process, especially for accounts flagged for suspicious activity.

According to the new policy, which is set to take effect on July 8, users may be asked to provide a passport or driver's license, along with a selfie or video for identity matching. Anthropic also says it may store verification outcomes, such as whether a user meets the required age threshold.

The company says this applies to a small group of users and is intended to support account review rather than automatic removal. Anthropic has already introduced age-verification measures in response to regional rules, and the latest policy expands how identity checks can be used across the platform.

For the verification process, Anthropic uses Persona, a San Francisco-based identity provider. The company says checks may appear during access to certain features or as part of routine safety and compliance reviews. It also notes that document retention periods are managed through its provider.

The update arrives as AI companies face growing pressure to strengthen trust, compliance, and access controls while keeping services open to legitimate users. In the broader AI landscape, identity verification may become a standard layer for safer and more accountable digital systems in the future.
