Anthropic joins Frontier's carbon removal coalition as funding expands

Anthropic has become the first AI startup to join Frontier, the carbon removal coalition backed by major tech companies. The move adds to a new $915 million funding round and lifts Frontier's total commitments to $1.8 billion.

Since its launch in 2022, Frontier has contracted nearly $700 million across more than 50 projects designed to remove about 1.8 million tons of carbon. The coalition supports a range of approaches, from direct air capture and enhanced rock weathering to bio-oil, ocean-based solutions, and bioenergy with carbon removal.

Anthropic's participation is notable because it is the company's first climate-focused deal. Frontier was created by firms including Stripe, Google, and Shopify to help scale promising carbon removal technologies while giving buyers a structured way to support verified projects.

The coalition said future contracts will be more selective, with a stronger focus on projects that can scale toward removing a gigaton of CO2 each year. New agreements are expected to run for roughly eight to ten years, and Frontier says it will continue contracting through 2040.

As carbon removal moves from early-stage experimentation toward larger deployment, partnerships like this may help shape a more mature climate-tech market and influence how companies plan for net-zero strategies in the years ahead.
