This declaration from Amodei came just before a deadline set by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, demanding a decision from Anthropic on whether to comply with these military requests. The Department of Defense has attempted to apply pressure by labeling Anthropic as a supply chain risk, a classification typically reserved for foreign adversaries, or by invoking the Defense Production Act, which would compel the company to prioritize military needs.
Amodei pointed out the inconsistency in these threats, noting that one portrays Anthropic as a security risk while the other positions its AI technology as vital for national security. He acknowledged the Department's right to select contractors that align with its mission but expressed hope that they would reconsider their approach given the significant value Anthropic's technology offers to the armed forces.
Currently, Anthropic stands out as the only advanced AI lab capable of providing classified-ready systems for military applications, although there are reports indicating that the Department of Defense is preparing xAI for similar roles.
Amodei reiterated the company's commitment to serving the Department of Defense and its personnel, advocating for the implementation of two specific safeguards. He stated that if the Department decides to part ways with Anthropic, the company will facilitate a seamless transition to another provider, ensuring that military planning and operations remain uninterrupted.
