In the rich tapestry of Southeast Asian culture, apsaras--mythical, shape-shifting spirits associated with water and clouds--have long inspired artists and storytellers. Anoushka Mirchandani, a San Francisco-based artist originally from India, channels these enchanting figures into her vibrant oil paintings, bringing them to life in a contemporary context.
Drawing from her childhood memories and the deep-rooted traditions of South Asian culture, Mirchandani's current solo exhibition, My Body Was a River Once, at the ICA San José, delves into the timeless essence of the apsara. Curated by Zoë Latner, the exhibition explores themes of femininity, power, and vulnerability, showcasing how these ethereal beings navigate the complexities of nature.
Mirchandani recalls her childhood visits to the ancient Buddhist caves of Ajanta and Ellora, where she first encountered the apsaras. "These water-women symbolize transformation, embodying sensuality and the passage of matrilineal wisdom," she explains, highlighting their significance in her work.
Her paintings feature almost faceless figures that seamlessly blend into their surroundings, merging with tropical foliage, boulders, and flowing water. The translucent quality of their forms evokes a sense of unity with nature, while the underpainting, infused with a terracotta hue, pays homage to the clay-rich soil of her native India, grounding her art in a sense of belonging.
Continuing through August 23, My Body Was a River Once invites viewers to reflect on the intricate relationship between humanity and the natural world. Mirchandani's work not only revives ancient myths but also inspires a dialogue about our connection to the environment and each other.
